‘Geothermal district heating’ is defined as the use of one or more production fields as sources of heat to supply thermal energy to a group of buildings and/or industries. The district heating sector is largely dominated by fossil fuels (e.g. 76% of the overall supply in Poland is from coal). Geothermal, with 250 heat plants in operation, Hot water from one or more geothermal wells is piped through a heat exchanger plant to heat city water in separate pipes. Hot city water is piped to heat exchangers in buildings to warm the air.
